Chapters was proud to have been a plaintiff in the American Booksellers Association lawsuit against Barnes & Noble and Borders for alleged anti-trust violations, which was filed in 1998, and went to trial in April 2001. After several days of a bench trial before an elderly and seemingly hostile judge, the ABA decided to accept a settlement, with which some of the plaintiffs, among them Chapters, did not agree. . . . And finally, people still ask us, what is a literary bookstore, even after 19 years in business! In short, we specialize in literary fiction, poetry, belles lettres, but please also read Michael Dirda's eloquent and moving discussion of "literary reading" which was in The Washington Post's OUTLOOK section Sunday July 25, 2004.
